Teacher as Writer

6 Session Yearlong Series That Begins on 9/22/07

Reflecting on “finding your voice” in her best-selling book Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott writes that “…the truth of your experience can only come through in your own voice. If it is wrapped in someone else’s voice, we readers will feel suspicious, as if you are dressed up in someone else’s clothes. You cannot write out of someone else’s big dark place; you can only write out of your own… When we have gone in and looked around for a long while, just breathing and finally taking it in – then we will be able to speak in our own voice and to stay in the present moment. And that moment is home” (199-201).

September 22 will be the start of a series of writers' workshops designed to give participants the time and opportunity to pursue the art of writing. Using the Amherst Writers and Artists methodology, new and experienced writers will come together in a safe and supportive environment to experiment and to explore, to listen and to share. By hearing and understanding the strength of our words, we learn to value and develop our personal writing art.

Presenter: Kathy Uschmann (CWP SI 1995), an experienced author, is a past National Writing Project Writing Retreat participant, Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is a Certified Workshop Leader for Amherst Writers and Artists methodology as well as a retired teacher. Currently, Kathy facilitates writing workshops for both children and adults.
