Teacher as Researcher

4 Session Yearlong Series That Begins on 9/22/07

Teacher as Researcher is the expansion of knowledge based on reflective teaching. It is observing and writing about things that occur in the classroom: the successful or unsuccessful exchange of ideas; the social understandings and misunderstandings; the ability or inability to manage special needs. The inquiring teacher seeks to know and describe the subtle textures of the teaching and learning experience: not empirically, but through narrative and anecdotes.

A teacher-inquirer is a professional who assumes the responsibility to developing a “research” question, planning the methodology for its study, analyzing and documenting the information gathered and writing about the process and findings. Such work is important to share with other teachers, motivating them, we hope, to explore the complexities of the classroom from the inside.

If you think that you would like to join a group of your peers and start the school year with inquiry in mind, please come to this Saturday Seminar (and bring a colleague). The group will meet four times during the school year. This Saturday is Session 1. Come with ideas, questions, and curiosity. Leave with a focused inquiry question and guidelines for carrying out your study.

Presenter: Donna Ozga (CWP SI 1996) is an experienced “Teacher Research/Inquiry” Program Facilitator and has been an active member of the CWP as a Teacher Consultant and Co-director. She is currently the English Department Head and Literacy Teacher at Bristol Eastern High School.
